For those of you who haven't heard yet, our Matthew decided to give us another hospital scare!! For the past few weeks he just hasn't been feeling right...he dropped about 30 pounds (which he was pretty proud of himself for until he figured out why), had extreme thirst, was using the bathroom ten times more than I was when I was pregnant, and just was tired all the time. I finally forced him to go to the doctor (not after callin his Mom and having her yell at him) and have his sugar tested because all of his symptoms were warning signs of diabetes...he went Thursday morning of last week and his sugar was around 230 (the normal range being about 70-90). Because he had already been diagnosed around October or November of last year as hyperglycemic, they made him an appointment for the next morning with a doctor. Well...that wasn't fast enough...because by the time evening rolled around he spiked and actually passed out at work. Luckily someone had noticed that he didn't look very good (and this is after I attempted to get him to stay home already because he looked terrible when he left mind you...are you noticing a stubborn trend??) and he had told them that he had gone to the doctor for high blood sugar so they knew what was happening. Someone in the class tested his sugar - which was over 500 and wouldn't even read on his machine - so they had him call me. I was very scared when I went to pick him up!! I'm sure I broke a few speeding laws on the way. So we got to the emergency room and he was tended to very quickly. They said pretty much immediately that he was a diabetic and did lots of blood work to confirm. We're still waiting on one test result, but it is most likely that he is type I. Right now he is on lots of insulin...we're hoping that once he is consistently regular that he will only need one shot in the morning instead of that plus one at each meal. We're in the great world of carb counting - really a change for both of us because I have to really plan out meals and help him figure things out and he can't just grab a snack when he feels hungry. Please keep us, and especially Matthew, in your prayers as we adjust our lifestyle...and hopefully bring his sugar down to a safe place over the next couple of weeks.
